return to 'Salem's Lot
omg ... ever since i've been noticing the billboards advertising the remake of the 1979 tv miniseries 'Salem's Lot i've found myself becoming a little anxious. some of you know this about me but for those who don't ... when i was very young my mother was an avid horror film fan. she would watch creature feature on a local tv station that showed horror movies every saturday afternoon. why she would ever let me watch them with her i'll never know ... i used to be so horribly afraid of the dark afterwards (of course) and would scream out her name until she would come and sleep with me. not every night mind you ... but on more than one occasion. the movie that completely destroyed me for WEEKS was The Exorcist but i'll talk about that movie (and it's effects on my psyche) some other time. the other movie that rendered me an extremely horrified child was the 1979 miniseries 'Salem's Lot based on the stephen king novel. there were images in that movie that petrified me ... not so much the main evil vampire (who looks pretty cheesey) but the child vampires!
god ... i used to be so afraid that someone or something would scratch at my window (just like in the movie) and say "let me in." i can't tell you how scared i was ... it was that movie that prompted me to sleep with my favorite blanket wrapped around my neck. it was my rationale that if a vampire tried to bite me i would feel it trying to take the blanket off my neck and i'd wake up and scream. i also had this old metal crucifix that i kept in a drawer because it alone scared me just to have it out in my room. jesus was affixed to the cross by one screw on the back ... i removed that screw, removed jesus (gave him to my mother and told her i never wanted to see it again) and left the plain cross next to my bed ... should any vampires show up at my window sill, well then i'd be ready. if you've seen the 1979 version of the movie, the kid who survives the whole vampire thing had a cross in his room (he was a horror movie fan and knew how to fend off vampires) so i learned my lesson well.
anyways ... the billboards ... seeing the billboards reminded me of all of those horrible feelings. i've since gotten over my fear (by watching both 'Salem's Lot and The Exorcist in full, as an adult) but ... god, those images still take me back. i think i had in the back of my mind that the remake would be cheesey and would not be that scary ... seeing the promo pix from the remake led me to believe that that would be the case:
ooooh ... but having just watched the first part (part 2 airs monday night at 8pm on TNT) i can attest that they did a pretty good job with the remake. the story is better ... it's more true to the book. the vampires, while pretty scary, are not as scary as they were in the original. you can tell the movie is an updated version (they utilize mobile phones, talk about the internet, there are gay characters, etc.) but the one scene they duplicated almost exactly was the scene with the vampire kid scratching at the window saying "let me in" and the smart kid who fends him off with the cross he has in his bedroom !!!
yikes! i'm not as scared as i was when i was a child but i thank my lucky stars i won't be sleeping alone tonight.

DETROIT ROCK CITY
mike had to go home for father's day and erik was taking brandon and jacob shopping for shoes/clothes. i, too, had to go home for father's day so i couldn't go to the mall with them.
i hung out with my dad for a few hours ... he rocks. but while i was at my parent's house erik called me to tell me that he found a pair of pink converse chuck taylors. i have been looking for a pair and almost ordered some online after we got back from LA. i asked him to pick them up for me ...
they're soo cool! duh, pink is pimp!
we all had plans to meet up downtown for the rock city festival which was a free series of shows in the parking lot behind the majestic/magic stick theaters.
we grabbed some drinks, bought some swag, ate some food ... actually used the "facilities" only because they had this awesome pump operated sink where you could wash your hands.
the first band we were there to see was saturday looks good to me:
then the fondas:
then pas/cal:
and finally ... brendan benson:
erik loves saturday looks good to me and kirsten and megan are friends with the guys from pas/cal. julie, the lead singer for the fondas, works at barbarella and we just love her ... her voice is amazing! i bought their cd and a pink t-shirt ... she came over to talk to us while we were watching brendan ... she's so fun ... we love her!
we were really excited to see brendan benson ... i've never seen him perform before. i got him to sign my cd afterwards too.
it was SO cool being at this festival. tracey showed up randomly and found us ... we hung out for a bit. brandon and megan were flirty all night ... meg white was in the hizzle ... she was hanging out with the female singer of the band blanche and was also hanging out with brendan. detroit has an awesome music scene ... say what you will about the city or the scene ... the music is where it's at.
it was a fun time in d-town ... that's for sure.
rock on!

DON'T BUG!
went to fishbone's for dinner. there was a very loud, pretty horrible cover band (made up of a guy a girl and the girl's sister [for one song]) for entertainment. as we were heading to the restaurant erik and i were telling the other guys about the horrible attack of fish flys that come every summer. there were none to be seen and i feared that they thought we were lying or at least exaggerating ... yeah, right ... as we finished dinner and went outside to the car ... THEY WERE SWARMING EVERYWHERE ... they were all over the ground, the walls, THE CARS ... OUR CAR!!! it was so gross ... it was hard to get into the car cuz they were on the door handles ... gross
these were the best pix i could take cuz my ass was NOT going to get out of the car ... oh god ... but as i got in and sat down i saw one on my shirt and i fucking screamed like a GIRL! it was so gross ... i got it off me and onto the floor ... erik had to throw it out the window. he got on the freeway and hit 80 miles per hour to get them to fly off his car (even tho jake warned that these bugs look to be "immune to miles per hour"). so 98% of them flew off ... i was finally relaxed and then i felt one on my arm ... OH MY GOD ... I FUCKING FREAKED OUT ... erik once again had to get it out of the car and i couldn't relax any further ... he pulled over (far from where the bugs infest) and i jumped around to make sure they were all off me. i was really afraid there would be squished bug on the back of my (white!) shirt but thankfully ... nothing.
god ... did i need a drink. we headed over to ferndale for some drinking and dancing at Q. it was fun ... they played madonna, janet, expose', erasure ... and the last song of the night ... MORRISSEY (irish blood, english heart)!
it was so rad ... we had fun ...
the boys are sticking around today for some more fun. i have to run home to see my dad but tonight we're going to the rock city festival in detroit ... it shall be fun!
