The Darkside

My blink and you missed it visit to Detroit this weekend is just about over but I really feel like it was one of my most successful trips. I got to spend some great quality time with my parents and I go to see as many of my friends as time allowed AND I got to spend an amazing night/early morning at one of my favorite places on Earth ... but I'll get to that at the end of this post. This afternoon I'm visiting with Tracey and Princess Zakiya before I board a plane for LA ... so let's get thru the day's goss and have at it ...

Here are a few amazing pictures of Britney Spears and her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James (the last photos taken of them together before Britney lost all visitation rights to her children earlier this month) which were shot by photographer Dani Brubaker. The way I understand the sitch, Britney hired Brubaker to photograph her and her boys for an Xmas card and Brubaker ended up selling the pics to OK! magazine, thereby angering Britters in the process. Nonetheless, the photos are very poignant and are very beautiful:

The last two pics, of Britney, really look out of place with the rest of the photos. The assumption is that it's Britney, I suppose it kinda looks like her, because they are posted in the same portfolio as the rest of the pics from the shoot but there is something about the face that looks a bit off. The lipstick matches to the first pic of Britney (which is deffo her) so I tend to believe that it is her ... the pics just look too Photoshopped to me. I really like this photos and I'm sure they mean a lot to Britney as well. Despite the fact that the photos were sold to a tabloid magazine, they are the last photos she took with her kids before she lost the right to see them. [Source, Source]

The French NRJ Music Awards were held in Cannes, France last night and a bunch of big names in music came out to present and accept awards for various French and International categories. I don't the awards themselves are the equivalent to the Grammy Awards here in the US but they do seem like a significant award, especially when you consider who came out for the event last night. Here are pictures of Celine Dion, Rihanna, Mika and newcomers Tokio Hotel on the red carpet at the NRJ Music Awards last night. Britney Spears did not attend the awards show in Cannes last night despite the fact that her album, Blackout, took home the prize for Album of the Year:

BRITNEY SPEARS' comeback album BLACKOUT has been named album of the year by French radio station NRJ. The ceremony, which took place on Saturday (26Jan08) in Cannes, praised the troubled star's latest effort, which fought off competition from Amy Winehouse, Mika, James Blunt and Rihanna. The awards also saw Justin Timberlake and Avril Lavigne honoured, landing gongs for best International Male and Female respectively. R+B star Rihanna, who picked up International Song of the Year for Don't Stop The Music, debuted a new shorter hairstyle at the French ceremony. Winehouse, who was up for International Revelation and International Album, was scheduled to perform at the event - but was unable to honour the appearance after she was admitted to rehab in London on Thursday.

Well hot damn! Britney Spears is back to winning awards again? That is some pretty hot shizz if you ask me. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- despite the fact that Britney Spears has made a mega mess of her life in recent months but her new album is freakin' hot as hell. I wouldn’t be surprised if she ended up winning more awards ... in spite of herself. Click HERE to see a full list of the 2008 NRJ Music Award winners. [Source]

Miss Kylie Minogue was also honored with an award at last nights NRJ Music Awards ... her amazing performance of her new single In My Arms she was honored with a Career Achievement award by Mika. Here are a few pics of Kylie on the red carpet and on stage at the NRJ Music Awards last night:

And you can click HERE to watch Kylie's performance et vous pouvez voir Kylie accepter sa récompense pour l'accomplissement de carrière. Hahaha ... I know the French is terrible but if you watch the clip you can hear that Mika's entire speech about Kylie's achievements is in French ... but in proper French. Much congrats Kylie ... you should receive an award every single day just for being you :) [Source]

In London, England ... Kelly Rowland, who is now a solo artist after the demise of Destiny's Child, gave a performance of her own at the world famous G-A-Y nightclub last night. Here are a few pics from Kelly's onstage performance:

I'm not sure that Kelly really needed to strip multiple peacocks of their lovely plumes just to show the G-A-Ys how much she hearts them but I suppose I can appreciate the sentiment. [Source]

In hometown pride news, Kirsten Haglund, the Miss Michigan contestant in the Miss America Pageant, was crowned the new Miss America in the newly revamped beauty pageant last night in Las Vegas, NV. Here are a few pics of Kirsten on stage in competition and then as she was crowned the 2008 Miss America winner:

Miss Michigan Kirsten Haglund, a 19-year-old aspiring Broadway star, was crowned Miss America 2008 on Saturday in a live show billed as the unveiling of the 87-year-old pageant's new, hipper look. Haglund, of Farmington Hills, Mich., sang "Over the Rainbow" and walked a crowd-pleasing strut in a black and gold bikini to clinch the title. She beat Miss Indiana Nicole Elizabeth Rash, the first runner up, and Miss Washington Elyse Umemoto, the second runner up for the $50,000 scholarship and year of travel that comes with the crown. Haglund, who studies music at the University of Cincinnati, grew up in a pageant family. Her mother is an active volunteer, and her grandmother Iora Hunt, competed for the crown as Miss Michigan 1944. Hunt joined Haglund at a news conference. "The only words that come to my mind is that this is a dream come true, not just for me but for my family as well," Haglund said. "I'm not just standing up here alone." Haglund, a cheery, classic blond, wore a revealing silver sequined dress and black bikini during the evening gown and swimsuit portions of the pageant. As her platform issue, she promised to advocate for awareness of eating disorders, an illness from which she has recovered. The crowning at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip was aired for the first time on TLC. It capped a four-week reality series, "Miss America: Reality Check," which followed the contestants as they were pushed to shed the dated look of Miss Americas past and adopt a more updated style.

First off, much congrats to Kirsten on her win ... I'm sure she'll do the great State of Michigan very proud. Secondly, I think it's awesome that the Miss America pageant is doing everything it can to make the pageant more modern and more fun. Adding the reality element to the competition (by way of a reality TV show that aired on TLC in the weeks leading up to last night's pageant) was a very smart move on their part. Even I watched some of those eps even tho I haven't watched the pageant on TV since my mom used to watch it when I was little. To be totally honest, tho, I don't know that I would've mentioned last night's pageant if Miss Michigan hadn't won ... but I'm glad that she did nonetheless ;) [Source]

UH OH! Another celeb pairing has fallen apart ... the fairytale romance between Daniel Radcliffe and his former Equus co-star Laura O'Toole has fallen apart. The couple is dunzo, y'all:

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has lost his magic after his relationship with actress girlfriend Laura O'Toole came to an end. The 18-year-old boy wizard started dating Laura after meeting during the West End stage play Equus. Both appeared in the steamy play and had to strip naked in raunchy sex scenes. But it is understood the couple have agreed to end their romance and are now just good friends. The news comes just days before the play Equus goes on a four-month nationwide tour of Britain. Laura said in a recent interview: "Daniel and I are still good friends and have a good time when we see each other. We just have to be realistic."

Meh. And I guess that, folks, is that. I don't find this news particularly interesting, I mean they're just kids breaking up, but I know that there are quite a few DanRad fans out there who are prolly very happy to hear that he is back on the market. The time is now, ladies, grab him while you can. [Source]

Here are a few pics of Milo Ventimiglia as he was featured in the now defunct Abercrombie & Fitch catalog/magazine from back in the day when he was but a young buck looking to make it big in Hollywood. You will note that he is quoted making a jab at Jake Gyllenhaal's success at winning the parts that he went after:

Hahahahahha ... I love it! I can understand how Milo might've been frustrated in this situation ... I can't believe that anyone thought that he looked "too old" for any part back then, he had such a cute babyface, but I like his sassiness for going on the record to say that Jakey poo looks old himself. Love it!! [Source]

Last week I posted a few partial body shots of Sarah Michelle Gellar in her new ad campaign for Vaseline Intensive Care lotion but here is the full, nekkid body shot of SMG for Vaseline:

Woot! SMG looks really good in this ad. I find it really classy and sexy without being gratuitous at all. Me like Buffy in the buff. [Source]

Kathy Griffin is featured on the cover of the new issue of The Advocate magazine:

I love the cheeky cover photo but you simply must read the portion of the interview that has been posted online HERE. In it, Kathy describes her recent meeting with and befriending of Liza Minelli which, unless you were able to see one of her 3 sold out engagements at the Kodak Theater recently, has yet to be talked about in the media. And this story is a dooze. Darion and I got to see the second of her sold out night's at the Kodak Theater and I gotta say, it was the funniest I've ever seen her. Kathy fans are gonna wanna check her out in this issue of The Advocate. It's a pretty awesome read. [Source]

Alex M., who was featured in the second season of MTV's Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, is celebrating her 21st birthday in Hollywood this week:

I'm sure she would love it if y'all came out to help her celebrate her legality. Just think of all the stories of her Laguna Beach cohorts that Alex will be able to spill after she throws back a few drinks. Hee hee, sounds like a fun time to me. [Source]

And finally ... it's time for the Hot Dude of the Week. This week we get to take a gander and admire the ... flexibility ... of Mr. Hot Dude Mike:

Amazing feats of flexibility should not be discounted ... they should be respected and admired. I, for one, greatly appreciate Mike's ability to kick his leg that high ... after all, you never know when that ability might come in handy :) Woot! Enjoy!! [Source]

Les News:
Last night, Erik and I got together to catch up and enjoy a nice dinner together. I went over to his home to see the childrens (our cats) for a bit before we make a quick trip to Record Time in Roseville, MI so that he could pick up a couple of cds. After our shopping jaunt, we went to our fave Detroit-area Thai restaurant Sy Thai for a sumptuous meal. It was so nice being able to just hang out and catch up with Erik every once in a while. He tells me he is so happy in his new relationship and I am so happy for him.

After dinner with Erik, I met up with Sarah and Mark for a dessert of popsicles before we went to Ferndale, MI to see a short set by The Orbitsuns, which is fronted by Vinnie Dombrowski of Sponge. Those guys are so damn cool ... it's easy to see how they are blowing up on the local scene in Detroit. Don't be surprised if you hear this name again once the band breaks nationwide.

Then ... at about 1am, we made the trek downtown to spend a few hours at City Club. Now folks, back in the day (way before I started blogging, way before I was a teacher) I used to hang out at City Club on a weekly basis. The place is an afterhours goth/industrial club which may look and sound scary but is incredibly fun and, strangely enough, homey. Sarah and I have gone back in recent years to try and reclaim some of that fun but it was always a disappointment. Too much of the old scene had changed and the place was full of new kids who we didn't know. But, having met Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails recently, I was inspired to give it another shot and away we went ... and let me tell you, we had an amazing time -- just like the good old days:

Reggie and Mike G came out to dance with us (we also got a lot of great old skool music from Siouxsie and the Banshees, KMFDM and more) ... and we actually saw about 5 kids from our hey day, which was a real nice surprise. I also found out that an old friend, Jeremy, is the new Saturday night DJ -- so we will deffo be going back to City Club on future visits to Detroit :)

OY ... my Detroit trip went by so fast ... I now have to get in the shower and meet up with Tracey and Z before I hit the airport and fly home. David is meeting me in LA tonight so it's gonna be a great week ahead.

I hope y'all have had a great weekend ... I am out.
