WWJD?
Mel Gibson was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in Malibu, Calif. early this morning for suspicion of DUI. Bail was set at $5,000. He was pulled over on the Pacific Coast Highway and a Breathalyzer test was administered. The arrest report lists the time of arrest as 2:36AM and the time booked as 4:06AM. A spokesman for the Los Angeles Country Sheriff's Department told TMZ, "Mel Gibson was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was released later this morning. The investigation was still ongoing, just like it would be with any other person." Um ... just like any other person? I highly doubt that ... in any case, I seem to remember that Mel Gibson was very vocal about his Christian beliefs. I don't think he learned this behavior in church. [Source]
UPDATE: TMZ has posted an update to the story posted on their website:
EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: A sheriff's official told TMZ Gibson had a blood alcohol level of .12. The legal limit in the state of California is .08.
That's a lot of alcohol, y'all. It is my understanding that you have to drink a few drinks to get your blood alcohol level up that high. No one should be driving under the influence of this much alcohol. EVER!
Additionally, there is a lot of religious back-and-forth going on in the comments. A few readers took this post as an attack on Christianity and I'm stating that it is not. While Mel Gibson was promoting his movie, The Passion of the Christ, he made it VERY known that he was opposed to "non-Christian" things including homosexuality. I took great offense to this and said so right here on this blog back when he made those comments. This post was meant to highlight the fact that Mel Gibson does not practice what he preaches. Drunk driving is a serious offense because it puts innocent people who happen to be driving at the same time at great risk. If Mr. Gibson is found guilty of this crime he should be punished to the full extent of the law. This is the point of this post.
UPDATE #2: TMZ, who has been all over this Mel Gibson DUI story, has just revealed more information regarding the arrest of Mel Gibson. According to TMZ.com, Mel Gibson was extremely belligerent to the arresting officer and then began to make anti-Semitic comments to and about that officer: TMZ has four pages of the original report prepared by the arresting officer in the case, L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy James Mee. According to the report, Gibson became agitated after he was stopped on Pacific Coast Highway and told he was to be detained for drunk driving Friday morning in Malibu. The actor began swearing uncontrollably. Gibson repeatedly said, "My life is f****d." Law enforcement sources say the deputy, worried that Gibson might become violent, told the actor that he was supposed to cuff him but would not, as long as Gibson cooperated. As the two stood next to the hood of the patrol car, the deputy asked Gibson to get inside. Deputy Mee then walked over to the passenger door and opened it. The report says Gibson then said, "I'm not going to get in your car," and bolted to his car. The deputy quickly subdued Gibson, cuffed him and put him inside the patrol car. Once inside the car, a source directly connected with the case says Gibson began banging himself against the seat. The report says Gibson told the deputy, "You mother f****r. I'm going to f*** you." The report also says "Gibson almost continually [sic] threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me." The report says Gibson then launched into a barrage of anti-Semitic statements: "F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?" The deputy became alarmed as Gibson's tirade escalated, and called ahead for a sergeant to meet them when they arrived at the station ... A law enforcement source says Gibson then noticed another female sergeant and yelled, "What do you think you're looking at, sugar tits?" I am completely shocked. The fact that Mel Gibson would have such language and such incendiary remarks so readily at his disposal is utterly repulsive. What kind of person is so readily able to spew out these types of anti-Semitic remarks? Head on over to TMZ for a full accounting of Mel's arrest and subsequent behavior. They have links to portions of the arresting report and many more details of the whole encounter.
There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of behavior.
